In this session, I taught how to drape the skirt for a Vionnet-style dress.
The key was letting the fabric drape naturally with minimal control to achieve the signature Vionnet look.
I demonstrated draping the skirt panels from the waistline, allowing the fabric to hang and create soft folds. The front has an open vent, while the back is draped for a slightly fuller shape over the hips.
Lesson Steps:
- Mark the center front and back on the dress form
- Drape the front skirt panel from center front, pinning at waist and letting it hang
- Repeat for the side/back panels, pinning at waist and letting drape
- Allow extra fabric in the back for a slightly fuller shape over hips if desired
- Measure each skirt panel section for the desired length
- For a floor-length skirt, expect to need around 4-4.5 meters of fabric total
- The minimal control over the draping creates the signature Vionnet soft, draped look
