In this course, I’ll teach how to drape a bias-cut dress inspired by the iconic designer Madeleine Vionnet. The dress features intricate diagonal seams and diamond shapes, creating a sculptural silhouette.

I demonstrated the process of taping guidelines directly on the dress form to design the dress pattern.

I began by preparing the dress form, removing the waist tape for clarity. I marked the neckline, center front, and center back lines. Then, I taped diagonal lines from the center front neckline, passing through the bust apex, to create the first diamond shape. Additional diagonal lines were added to form more diamond and triangular shapes around the bodice and skirt areas. This process defined the intricate seam lines and pattern pieces for the dress design.

Lesson Steps:

  • Mark the neckline, center front, and center back lines on the dress form
  • Tape a diagonal line from center front neckline, passing through bust apex, toward center back
  • Create a diamond shape at center front by adding intersecting diagonal lines
  • Add more diagonal lines to form diamond/triangular shapes around bodice and skirt
  • Separate pattern pieces by taping along desired seam lines
  • Identify each pattern piece by number for future construction
