In this session, I focused on attaching the gathered sleeves to the Freya dress bodice. I demonstrated the process of preparing the sleeve lining, gathering the sleeve cap, and carefully sewing the sleeves to the armholes. I also discussed some fitting adjustments and final touches like adding covered buttons to complete the dress.

Demonstration steps:

  1. Prepared the sleeve lining and attached it to the sleeve facing
  2. Created gathering stitches on the sleeve cap
  3. Carefully pinned and hand-basted the gathered sleeve to the bodice armhole
  4. Machine-stitched the sleeve to the bodice, adjusting gathers as needed
  5. Repeated process for the second sleeve
  6. Tried the dress on a form and made fitting adjustments
  7. Discussed adding covered buttons and a waist stay for the final look

Questions & Answers:

  • Q: How do you handle excess fabric volume in a dress?
  • A: There are a few options: 1) Take in side seams to remove volume. 2) Add darts to shape excess fabric. 3) For twist designs, gather fabric to one side instead of twisting. Always consider the fabric properties when deciding.

  • Q: Any tips for sewing sleeves smoothly?
  • A: Pin and hand-baste first before machine stitching. Go slowly and adjust gathers as you sew. Double-check measurements frequently. Consider doing a double row of gathering stitches for more control.

This session focused on the detailed process of attaching gathered sleeves, which can be tricky but creates a beautiful effect when done carefully. The Freya dress is nearly complete – just the zipper, lining, and final touches remain!
