In this week’s session, I focused on creating quick and easy jersey patterns for skirts and t-shirts using existing bodice blocks. I demonstrated how to adapt woven fabric patterns for knit fabrics, showing techniques for both fitted and oversized styles. The session covered essential adjustments for stretch fabrics and tips for achieving the right fit in jersey garments.

Demonstration Steps:

  1. Traced the basic bodice block and made initial adjustments for stretch fabric
  2. Demonstrated how to create a jersey skirt pattern, including waistband options
  3. Showed how to adapt the bodice block for a fitted t-shirt pattern
  4. Explained sleeve cap adjustments for knit fabrics
  5. Demonstrated how to modify the fitted t-shirt pattern for an oversized look
  6. Discussed options for extending the t-shirt into a dress pattern

Questions & Answers:

  • Q: How do you determine how much to take in for the stretch factor in jersey?
  • A: Test your fabric’s stretch percentage and adjust accordingly. For firmer jerseys, take in less (about 1-2 inches total), for stretchier fabrics, you can take in more.

  • Q: Can you use this method for a V-neck t-shirt?
  • A: Yes, simply mark where you want the V to end on the front piece and use a curve ruler to draw the neckline. You can make it straight or slightly curved depending on your preference.

  • Q: How do you make a t-shirt dress from this pattern?
  • A: Extend the hem down to your desired length. You can keep it straight for an oversized look or add slight shaping at the hips and knees for a more fitted silhouette.
