LEVEL 7

Welcome to Level 7 of Dressmakers’ Path! Pheew, you are almost done. I am super proud of you to get to this point. It is awesome to learn all these skills so far, but what about finishings? Linings and facing were my nightmare for a long time. You can design, drape the best piece, but without knowing how to finish it around the neck, armhole, hem and lining, you will not have a complete work. So in this level we will learn more about making patterns for facing and linings. As you progress through the level, make sure you share your progress with us in our Community group, so you can get support & feedback from our members & also from me during our Weekly Live Q&A Sessions! Let’s dive right in.

LEVEL 7 STUDY MATERIALS
Lining, Facings, Finishing

DCM Masterclass – Facing & Lining Mini-Session

In this guide, I explain how to create facing and lining patterns for various bodice and skirt designs. I cover different techniques for making facings, including how to draft them for basic bodices, princess seam bodices, and skirts, as well as how to incorporate linings with facings. I also provide tips on interfacing, seam allowances, and how to handle darts when creating lining patterns.

Introduction to Interfacings

I explain the different types of fusible interfacings: woven, non-woven, and knit. I demonstrate various weights and applications for each type, showing how they interact with different fabrics and discussing their uses in garment construction, from lightweight silks to structured corsets. I also provide tips on selecting the right interfacing for specific projects and fabrics.

Interfacing Part 2: Application

In this guide, I demonstrate how to interface different types of fabric using various interfacing materials, including woven horsehair for structured garments and knit interfacing for lighter fabrics. I show the process of fusing interfacing to fabrics like twill, crepe back satin, and silk charmeuse, explaining the differences in structure and drape that interfacing can provide.

Bias Binding on Silk Fabrics

In this lesson, I teach a technique for sewing bias binding without pressing the bias tape beforehand. I demonstrate how to attach the bias tape to the fabric edge and stitch it in place neatly.

Cutting Bias Strips on Silk Fabrics

In this video, I teach how to cut bias tape from silk fabric, which can be used for bindings or spaghetti straps. I also demonstrate how to extend the length of bias tape by joining two pieces together.

French Seam on Silk Fabrics

In this video I teach how to sew a French seam on silk fabric using an industrial sewing machine. I demonstrate the steps involved in creating a neat and enclosed seam suitable for delicate fabrics like silk charmeuse.

How to Sew a Baby Hem on Silk

In this guide, I demonstrate how to create an extremely thin hem on delicate silk fabrics using a freehand technique. I show how to achieve a professional finish by stitching very close to the edge, carefully trimming excess fabric, and folding the hem again for a nearly invisible result.
