In this lesson, I teach a technique for sewing bias binding without pressing the bias tape beforehand. I demonstrate how to attach the bias tape to the fabric edge and stitch it in place neatly.
The key steps involve aligning the bias tape, folding it precisely, and stitching it in place using the sewing machine.
Lesson Steps:
- Place the bias tape on the fabric edge, aligning the raw edges
- Start folding the bias tape over the fabric edge, gently pulling it taut without stretching
- Fold the bias tape over again, ensuring the fold passes just beyond the stitching line
- Press the folded bias tape in place
- Either hand-stitch the folded edge closed or machine stitch it in place
- For machine stitching, carefully position the needle in the bias tape seam allowance
- Sew slowly, ensuring the bottom fold remains closed and the stitching catches the seam allowance
- Use a short stitch length for neat, small stitches
