In this guide, I explain how to create and adjust a French dart for different body types and desired fits.

I cover the process of manipulating darts to achieve a fitted bodice, discussing the differences between a relaxed fit and a super-fitted look. I also demonstrate how to handle large darts for fuller busts and provide tips on reducing bulk in the dart area.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Determine the desired fit (relaxed or super-fitted)
  2. Close existing darts to create the French dart
  3. Adjust the waist shaping if necessary
  4. Redraw the side seam line
  5. Locate the new dart point (about 1 inch away from the bust point)
  6. Draw the new French dart
  7. Fold and press the dart, with excess facing up
  8. Redraw the side seam line to accommodate the new dart
  9. For large darts, consider cutting out excess fabric and adding seam allowance

I want to emphasize that this technique may need adjustments based on individual body shapes and sizes.

Remember, the French dart works well for some figures but may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with fuller busts.

Always consider the overall garment design and how it will interact with the French dart placement.
