In this guide, I teach how to draft a simple straight waistband pattern without an underwrap.

I explain how to measure the skirt waist, create the waistband pattern piece, and add necessary markings and seam allowances.

I also provide tips on fabric grain direction and using interfacing for the waistband.

Steps for drafting the straight waistband:

  1. Measure the skirt waist, excluding dart areas.
  2. Draw a rectangle on paper based on the waist measurement.
  3. Mark the center front and center back.
  4. Decide on the waistband width and mark fold lines.
  5. Add notches for side seams and center back.
  6. Add seam allowances at the bottom and center back.
  7. Cut the pattern piece on the fabric’s cross-grain.
  8. Cut an interfacing piece if needed.

This waistband is designed to be cut on the fold at the center front, with no overlap.

It’s a great starting point for beginners before moving on to more complex waistband styles.
