This video teaches how to add side seam pockets to a skirt. It demonstrates the steps involved in creating a pocket pattern, cutting the fabric pieces, and sewing the pockets into the side seams of the skirt.

A tutorial on adding functional side seam pockets to a skirt that originally didn’t have pockets, suitable for looser skirt styles rather than pencil skirts.

Lesson Steps:

  • Create or obtain a pocket pattern piece with a teardrop shape and seam allowance
  • Cut two mirrored pocket pieces from the pattern for each pocket
  • Mark the desired pocket placement on the skirt’s side seams
  • Unpick the side seam stitching between the marked points
  • Pin one pocket piece to each side seam, right sides together
  • Stitch the straight edges of the pocket pieces to the side seams
  • Pull the pocket pieces together and pin the side seam above and below the pocket
  • Mark the seam allowance transition points at the top and bottom of the pocket
  • Sew the side seam, pivoting at the marked points to sew around the pocket edge
  • Topstitch around the pocket opening for a neat finish (optional)
  • Repeat the process for the other side seam, ensuring the pockets are level
