In this video I teach how to sew a French seam on silk fabric using an industrial sewing machine. I demonstrate the steps involved in creating a neat and enclosed seam suitable for delicate fabrics like silk charmeuse.

Lesson Steps:

  • Place two silk fabric pieces with wrong sides together, not face-to-face
  • Sew a straight seam at 1/4 inch seam allowance
  • Trim the seam allowance close to the stitching line
  • Press the seam allowances to one side
  • Fold the fabric along the seam line, enclosing the raw edges inside
  • Sew another seam at 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the folded edge
  • Press the seam flat, enclosing all raw edges neatly inside

I emphasize using a smaller needle size (9 or 10) to prevent large holes in the delicate silk fabric. I also caution against stretching the slippery fabric too much during sewing.
