This guide teaches how to add ease around the hip area when draping a skirt pattern.

It explains the importance of providing extra room at the hips for comfortable movement and demonstrates the steps to blend the ease from the hip line to the waist and hem.

The guide also mentions the possibility of creating a more fitted skirt by curving the back seams around the hips, which will be covered in a separate lesson.

Steps for adding ease to a skirt pattern:

  1. Determine the amount of ease needed around the hip area, typically 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) for a fitted skirt.
  2. Mark the ease amount on the hip line of the front and back skirt pattern pieces, distributing it evenly.
  3. Draw a straight line from the hip line to the hem, maintaining the ease amount.
  4. Blend the ease into the waistline by curving the pattern line gradually from the hip to the waist.
  5. Blend the ease into the hem area by curving the pattern line gradually from the hip to the hem.
  6. When truing the front and back skirt patterns, start from the hip line where the ease was added, match the side seams, and blend any discrepancies between the front and back patterns.
