In this guide, I teach about different types of muslins used for draping and how to choose the right one based on your project’s silhouette, fabric, and stretch.

I cover various muslin options including voile, lightweight and mid-weight standard muslin, cotton twill, hemp muslin, and mid-weight linen, explaining their characteristics and best uses in draping different garments.

I also demonstrate the appearance and feel of each muslin type, helping students understand which one best emulates their final fabric choice.

Steps for choosing the right muslin:

  1. Consider your garment’s silhouette
  2. Identify your final fabric type
  3. Determine if stretch is needed
  4. Select a muslin that closely matches the weight and drape of your final fabric
  5. For stretchy fabrics, use a muslin with similar stretch
  6. For non-stretch wovens, choose a muslin that best emulates your actual fabric
