In this guide, I demonstrate how to properly prepare an adjustable dress form for draping and patternmaking. I show the steps to close gaps, cover the form with batting and stretchy gauze, and address potential fitting issues caused by the dress form’s shape not matching the body perfectly. The goal is to create a stable, pinnable surface that approximates the desired body measurements as closely as possible.

Steps for Preparing the Adjustable Dress Form:

  • Close all gaps in the dress form using batting strips pinned in place.
  • Cover the dress form with batting from the neck down to the hips, pinning it securely.
  • Use stretchy cotton gauze to wrap and smooth over the batting, stretching and pinning it tightly.
  • Address areas like the shoulders, neckline, and armholes that may not conform well by cutting, folding, and pinning the gauze.
  • Adjust the dress form to the smallest possible size that approximates your body measurements.
  • Be aware of potential fitting issues caused by the dress form’s shape differing from your body, and be prepared to make adjustments to patterns later.
