In this guide, I demonstrate how to correct a sway back issue on a pattern when the pattern is designed for a straighter back.
I explain the process of pinning and marking the excess fabric on a test garment, transferring those adjustments to the pattern by creating a center back seam or adding a dart, and ensuring the pattern pieces align properly for a better fit.
Lesson Steps:
- Make a straight t-shirt with jersey fabric and try it on.
- Identify the excess fabric fold or bunching at the back caused by the sway back.
- Pin the excess fabric until the t-shirt falls straight on your back.
- Remove the t-shirt and mark the amount of excess fabric pinned.
- On the pattern, open the waistline and create a dart or add a center back seam to remove the excess fabric.
- Smooth out the pattern pieces, ensuring the back is straight and the side seams align properly.
- If needed, make adjustments to the front pattern piece to match the back piece.
- Reassemble the pattern pieces, ensuring they are level and aligned correctly.
This process allows you to create a pattern that accommodates your sway back, resulting in a better fit for your garments.
