This guide demonstrates how to extend a basic bodice block pattern to create a longer top or tunic length.

It shows how to use the existing skirt pattern piece along with the bodice to extend the length below the waistline.

The guide also covers how to make modifications like adding ease, shaping the hemline, and closing the bust dart for a more relaxed or fitted silhouette.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Lay out the bodice and skirt pattern pieces together, aligning at the waistline.
  2. Trace along the bodice down to the desired tunic length using the skirt as a guide for the hip curve.
  3. Optionally, add ease by extending out at the side seams, bringing the hem wider if desired.
  4. To create a drop shoulder look, extend the shoulder point down and out slightly, curving the armhole accordingly.
  5. Close the bust dart by folding the excess towards the center front, tracing the new side seam.
  6. For a front waist dart, mark the dart point above the hip line and draw the dart legs inward.
  7. Transfer markings to a muslin toile and drape on the dress form to check fit and make adjustments.
