In this guide, I demonstrate how to create an extremely thin hem on delicate silk fabrics using a freehand technique.
I show how to achieve a professional finish by stitching very close to the edge, carefully trimming excess fabric, and folding the hem again for a nearly invisible result.
The guide also covers important technical aspects such as needle selection, thread choice, and machine settings for working with fine silk fabrics.
Lesson Steps:
- Set up the sewing machine with the appropriate foot and adjust stitch length to 1.
- Optionally pre-press the edge about 1/4 inch.
- Begin stitching very close to the edge, holding the fabric steady from both sides.
- Carefully trim excess fabric close to the stitches without cutting them.
- Fold the hem again as small as possible.
- Stitch the folded hem very close to the edge, going slowly.
- Press the finished hem.
Additional tips:
- Use silk needles (size 9) for thin silk fabrics.
- Use strong polyester thread like Gutermann’s.
- Keep stitch length very small for best results.
- This technique is ideal for visible edges like armholes or sleeve hems in chiffon, georgette, or silk fabrics.
