In this guide, I demonstrate the process of transforming an existing t-shirt into a pattern by laying it flat, pinning it to a paper, and tracing the outline.
I provide step-by-step instructions on how to properly align the t-shirt pieces, mark the necessary points, and transfer the front, back, and sleeve sections onto the paper to create a reusable pattern.
Steps Involved (Instructional Guide):
- Press the t-shirt to ensure it is flat and straight.
- Lay half of the t-shirt on a paper or mat, pinning at the underarm, neck, shoulder, and armhole points to keep it in place.
- Mark the center front, center back, and other key points with chalk or a marker.
- Draw lines around the neckline, armholes, and side seams, following the t-shirt’s outline.
- Repeat the process for the back piece of the t-shirt.
- Align the front and back pieces, matching the shoulder seams, center front, and center back.
- Trace the side seams, adjusting for any length differences between the front and back.
- For the sleeve, fold the paper and place the shoulder point of the sleeve on the fold.
- Straighten and pin the sleeve, ensuring it lays flat.
- Trace the sleeve outline, including the armhole curve and sleeve cap.
- Make any necessary adjustments to the pattern pieces, such as smoothing curves or correcting any discrepancies.
By following these steps, I can create a custom pattern based on an existing t-shirt, allowing me to reproduce or modify the design as desired.
