In this guide, I demonstrate how to modify the neckline of a basic bodice block pattern by draping directly on a dress form.

I explain that for different neckline styles, you don’t need separate blocks; instead, you can take the basic block, transfer it to a muslin fabric, and then drape and adjust the neckline shape directly on the dress form to achieve the desired look.

This hands-on approach allows you to visualize and refine the neckline design in real-time on the 3D form.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Start with a basic bodice block pattern.
  2. Transfer the block pattern onto a muslin fabric.
  3. Pin or baste the muslin onto a dress form, closing any darts.
  4. Decide on the desired neckline shape and adjust the muslin fabric directly on the dress form to achieve that shape.
  5. For the front neckline, drape and reshape the muslin as needed.
  6. For the back neckline, you can either keep the existing back dart or eliminate it by closing the dart and continuing the neckline shape from the front.
  7. Refine the neckline curves and shape until you’re satisfied with the design.
  8. Once the desired neckline is achieved, transfer the new shape back onto your paper pattern.
