In this guide, I discuss the different types of jersey fabrics suitable for draping projects, focusing on their stretch properties, weight, and drape.
I explain the difference between two-way and four-way stretch fabrics, and recommend using double jerseys or interlocks with a nice drape and weight for draping cocktail dresses.
I also showcase various jersey fabrics I’ve purchased, including silk, viscose, and rayon options, and mention the use of mesh as a lining for a future jersey dress project.
Steps for Jersey Fabric Selection and Draping:
- Determine the stretch properties needed: two-way stretch (stretches in one direction and recovers) or four-way stretch (stretches in both directions and recovers).
- Evaluate the weight and drape of the fabric by holding it up – heavier fabrics with good drape will drag down and create lines.
- Consider double jerseys or interlocks, which have the same texture on both sides and provide a nice drape.
- Avoid cotton-based jerseys, as they tend to roll at the edges.
- For draping muslin samples, inexpensive rayon or nylon jerseys with two-way stretch can be used.
- For the final garment, opt for higher-quality double jerseys or interlocks in fabrics like silk, viscose, or rayon for a luxurious look and feel.
- For lined jersey dresses, use a mesh lining like power mesh or a lighter mesh fabric.
