In this week’s session, I discussed plans for our next project – a versatile short shirt dress. I shared my thoughts on combining drafting and draping techniques for this garment, aiming to create an oversized style with interesting sleeve details. We also reviewed student progress on the Brooke dress and addressed various questions about fabric choices, pattern adjustments, and draping techniques.
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Where should we post questions for the live Q&A?
- A: While we’re still figuring out the best system, I tend to check the Facebook group more frequently as it’s easier for me to access on-the-go.
- Q: Can we make the Brooke dress more fitted?
- A: Absolutely! Try shortening the front drape piece to create a more fitted silhouette. You can also add darts or shape the dress more closely to your body.
- Q: How do I add pockets to the Brooke dress?
- A: I’m adding in-seam pockets to my version. They’ll be placed along the side seams and won’t be visible from the outside.
- Q: Where can I find a large roll of tracing paper like yours?
- A: Look for suppliers that sell pattern-making supplies, often found in downtown areas of larger cities. I’ll post some of my LA sources in the Facebook group for those who want to order online.
This session was focused on addressing student questions and discussing our exciting new shirt dress project. I’m looking forward to combining drafting and draping techniques to create a versatile and stylish garment in our upcoming sessions.
