In this week’s session, I shared exciting updates about the Draping Society’s new 9-step success path for beginners and our upcoming jersey dress projects. I outlined the structured learning approach we’re developing to help members progress from foundational skills to creating their own designs. Additionally, I previewed three new jersey dress projects that will be our focus in the coming weeks, offering a refreshing change from our recent shirt-focused projects.
Demonstration Steps:
- Explained how to identify and correct off-grain fabric
- Demonstrated finding the true cross-grain by pulling a thread
- Showed how to stretch fabric on the bias to correct warping
- Illustrated how to modify a basic bodice pattern for a V-neck
Questions & Answers:
- Q: How would you drape a yoke for a triangle down-shaped shirt?
- A: You can do it in one piece with a center front opening, but I’d suggest adding a shoulder seam for easier fit adjustments, especially if it’s a larger piece.
- Q: How do I correct off-grain fabrics?
- A: First, try ironing the fabric. If that doesn’t work, you can try stretching it diagonally or pulling a cross-grain thread to find the true grain line and cut accordingly.
- Q: Will giving my fitted bodice a V-neck affect the width of my shoulders?
- A: No, it won’t affect your shoulder width. You can open up the V-neck from the center front without changing the shoulder. I demonstrated how to modify the pattern for a V-neck while maintaining the shoulder width.
- Q: What type of iron do you recommend?
- A: I use an Oliso iron for everyday use, but for more professional work, I have a Laura Star iron with powerful steam capabilities. Both are good options depending on your needs and budget.
