In this week’s session, I demonstrated how to drape and create a pattern for a pleated bias skirt inspired by a Jenny Packham design. I showed the draping process on a dress form, then transferred the draped fabric to paper to create the initial pattern. We’ll continue refining this pattern and constructing the skirt over the next few sessions.
Demonstration Steps:
- Placed fabric on dress form at a diagonal to create bias drape
- Pinned and pleated fabric at center front
- Marked important lines and points on draped fabric
- Transferred draped fabric to paper
- Began creating pattern pieces by folding pleats and tracing lines
- Discussed next steps for refining pattern and constructing skirt
Questions & Answers:
- Q: How do you add seam allowances to the pleated pattern?
- A: Add seam allowances around the edges, following the pleat lines. Make notches at each pleat point to ensure accurate assembly later.
- Q: Can you show an easier way to make this skirt as well?
- A: Yes, in a future session I’ll demonstrate a simpler “Zara-style” version that’s quicker to make, though it won’t have the same level of control over the drape and fit.
- Q: Will we see the sewing process for this skirt too?
- A: Absolutely! I plan to take this project all the way through pattern-making, cutting fabric, basting, fitting, sewing, and even adding a lining. We’ll complete the entire skirt over the next few sessions.
