In this week’s session, I focused on addressing questions about lining and hemming the Jenny Packham-inspired bias skirt we’ve been working on. I discussed different lining options, demonstrated cutting the lining pieces, and explained my approach for creating a clean finish. We also decided on our next project – a beautiful draped dress with an interesting front detail.

Demonstration Steps:

  1. Explained options for lining the bias skirt using the same pattern or a simplified version
  2. Demonstrated cutting lining pieces from the same pattern as the outer skirt
  3. Discussed flattening pleats in the lining to reduce bulk
  4. Showed how to adjust the front piece for lining if needed
  5. Cut lining pieces and prepared for next week’s sewing demonstration

Questions & Answers:

  • Q: Would it work to add a simple full-length straight skirt lining on the bias without the pleats?
  • A: That could work if your outer fabric isn’t sheer, but you may see seam lines through the outer layer. I recommend using the same pattern for the lining to avoid issues.

  • Q: Can we use a tapered skirt sloper for the lining cut on the bias?
  • A: While that’s an option, I showed examples of how it can create unflattering folds visible through the outer layer. It’s best to use the same pattern for a smooth look.

  • Q: How do we attach the lining if we’re taking out gathers in the front piece?
  • A: For the front piece, we may not need lining at all. I’ll demonstrate next week how to finish the front opening cleanly without adding bulk.
