In this lesson, I taught how to drape different styles of dresses – sheath, semi-fitted, and shift – on a dress form.

I demonstrated the steps to create the basic foundation and then showed how to modify it to achieve each dress style.

Lesson Steps:

  • Aligned the fabric at center front, pinning at neck, waist, and hip
  • Smoothed fabric around shoulders and armholes, pinning temporarily
  • Created darts at bust and waist to shape the dress
  • For shift dress: Kept it straight with no darts below bust
  • For semi-fitted: Added one dart below bust toward hip
  • For sheath: Added two darts below bust, dividing excess evenly
  • Adjusted darts and marked seam lines on fabric
  • Closed darts and attached shoulder/side seams to complete dress
  • Demonstrated modifying neckline to a boat neck style
