In this week’s session, I finished drafting the skirt pattern for our Burberry-inspired dress project and made adjustments to ensure the bodice and skirt pieces align correctly. I also introduced a new geometric dress project based on a Roxanda design that several students expressed interest in. Next week, we’ll do a deep dive into drafting and constructing this new voluminous party dress.
Demonstration Steps:
- Traced and refined the back skirt pattern piece
- Adjusted darts on the back skirt
- Aligned the bodice and skirt patterns to check fit
- Made corrections to ensure smooth lines and proper matching
- Discussed construction methods for tailoring the pieces together on a dress form
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Why does the top fold go up and the rest fold down on the waist?
- A: That’s how it was designed on Kate’s dress – the first folds on the bodice go up, then the waist fold and skirt folds go down. We’re trying to emulate the original as closely as possible.
- Q: Can you explain more about the new geometric dress project?
- A: It’s a voluminous party dress with a fitted bodice lining and large puff sleeves. The pattern is essentially a large rectangle shaped on the dress form. We’ll cover the full construction next week since so many were interested.
