In this week’s session, I demonstrated how to transform a basic A-line skirt pattern into a flared skirt with controlled flare. We explored techniques for adding flare strategically to create different silhouettes, and I explained how to adjust the pattern for various body types and design preferences.
Demonstration Steps:
- Traced the front and back of the basic A-line skirt pattern
- Divided the skirt into sections for adding flare
- Spread the pattern pieces to add controlled flare
- Adjusted the waistline and side seams
- Removed darts from the back pattern piece
- Redrew pattern lines for a smooth, flared silhouette
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Could you have wide gaps towards the center front and closer gaps to the side to give flatter sides?
- A: Yes, you can control the flare distribution this way. I demonstrated how to create different flare effects by varying the spread at different points of the skirt.
- Q: As the yoke in the design is fitted, wouldn’t spreading the pattern through the yoke make it less fitted?
- A: If the yoke extends to the hip, there will be some ease. For a very fitted yoke, you may need to add darts. I’ll provide options for both fitted and slightly looser yokes in our next session.
Next week, we’ll finish the flared skirt design and discuss options for customizing the yoke and waistband placement. After that, we’ll move on to creating a slinky skirt pattern.
