In this week’s session, I continued our work on the tailored jacket block, focusing on adding waist shaping and beginning the two-piece sleeve. We encountered some challenges with the sleeve instructions, which I’ll need to review and clarify for next time. The session demonstrated the complexities of pattern drafting and the importance of double-checking measurements and instructions.
Demonstration Steps:
- Reviewed and copied the master jacket block
- Added waist shaping to the back and front pieces
- Marked reference points for the two-piece sleeve
- Began drafting the two-piece sleeve block (incomplete due to confusion with instructions)
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Can you make a jacket with the draping method or only pattern drafting?
- A: You can definitely make a jacket using the draping method as well. While drafting is more commonly used in industry due to its technical nature, draping is also possible and I can demonstrate that in the future if you’d like.
- Q: What edition of the Aldrich book are you using?
- A: I’m using the 3rd edition from 2000. There are some differences between editions, which can cause confusion. It’s best to follow along with the video demonstration when possible.
I decided to pause the two-piece sleeve demonstration to review and clarify the instructions before our next session. This will ensure I can provide accurate guidance without wasting your time. Remember, even experienced pattern makers encounter challenges – it’s all part of the learning process!
