In this session, I demonstrated the steps of constructing and fitting the waist of the Freya dress.
I showed how to gather and attach the bodice and skirt at the waist, creating the twisted front detail.
I emphasized the importance of careful fitting and adjustments throughout the process.
Demonstration Steps:
- Gathered the waist of bodice front and back pieces
- Pinned and fitted bodice to dress form
- Created twisted front detail at center front
- Attached skirt to bodice at waist
- Carefully pinned and basted waist seam
- Machine sewed waist seam
- Trimmed and cleaned up seam allowances
Questions & Answers:
- Q: How do I ensure the waist gathering looks even?
- A: Carefully divide and adjust the gathers, pinning in place before sewing. Double check measurements from side seam to center on both sides.
- Q: Should the center front be fully closed or left slightly open?
- A: This is a design choice – I decided to leave mine slightly open at the neckline for a more flattering look, but you can adjust as you prefer.
- Q: How much ease should be left at the waist?
- A: Don’t make it too tight, as you need room to attach the skirt. Pull the gathers to fit but leave a little ease for comfort and construction.
I also discussed fabric choices for the Freya dress, upcoming projects like lightweight corsets, and encouraged our members to share their fabric selections in the group for guidance.
