In this week’s session, I introduced my upcoming DDM (Direct Design Method) workshop, explaining how it differs from traditional draping methods.
I shared my vision for teaching creative draping techniques that allow for unique, sophisticated designs without traditional construction constraints.
I spent most of the session showing you examples from renowned designers who use similar techniques and explaining how we can adapt these methods for different body types and style preferences.
DDM is my approach to designing through playing with fabric directly on the form, without pre-planned sketches.
I introduced several creative draping techniques we’ll explore:
-
- Geometrical cuts (rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, diamonds)
- Different fabric placements and manipulations
- Scale variations of the same technique
- Single-seam construction methods
- Unconventional grain line placements
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Will this work for different body types?
- A: Absolutely! I’ll show you how these techniques can be adapted for all body types, and we can use them with or without foundation garments like corsets.
- Q: Can these techniques be simplified for everyday wear?
- A: Yes! I’ll teach you how the same principles can create both dramatic runway pieces and wearable everyday garments by adjusting scale, fabric choice, and placement.
We’ll begin our workshop in nine days, and I’ve planned multiple sessions, demonstrations, and Q&As throughout the week.
After the workshop, for my Draping Society members, we’ll continue exploring how to apply these techniques to different garment elements like sleeves, skirts, and tops.
I’m so excited to share this journey with you!
