In this week’s session, I demonstrated different ways to create draped sleeve variations using our DDM Creative Draping technique.
I explored various sleeve styles, from simple draped designs to more complex versions with pleats and ruching, showing how the same technique can produce dramatically different effects depending on fabric choice and placement.
Demonstration Steps:
- Created basic draped sleeve with 22cm drape length (plus 5cm for lift)
- Marked and pinned sleeve around armhole to establish shape
- Added pleats at armhole for volume (second variation)
- Incorporated ruching detail with elastic for jersey version
- Demonstrated how different fabrics (poplin vs jersey) affect the drape
- Showed techniques for marking and transferring pattern pieces
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Can you improvise without an arm form?
- A: Yes, but having a proper arm form makes it much easier to see how the sleeve will actually look and fit. I can share instructions for making one.
- Q: Would this work with bias cut fabric?
- A: Yes, but we’ll explore bias applications in future sessions after mastering the basic technique.
- Q: How do you ensure proper sleeve fit?
- A: Having a basic bodice that fits well is key – you can pin and test sleeves on it to check fit and drape before finalizing the pattern.
Next week we’ll focus on applying this draping technique to trousers, exploring how to incorporate these creative elements while maintaining wearability and proper fit.
