In this final session of 2024, I demonstrated how to complete our draped trousers project, focusing on adding pockets into the draped design, creating the fly front, and finalizing construction details.

We worked through the technical aspects of incorporating pockets without compromising the drape, and discussed options for the waistband finish.

Demonstration Steps:

  • Checked and trued the side seams and inner leg seams to ensure proper fit
  • Added a thin waistband (2cm width) to be cut on bias for flexibility
  • Created pocket pattern pieces designed to work with the draped sections
  • Developed fly front facing and guard patterns
  • Added all necessary notches and markings for construction
  • Determined optimal fabric choices for pocket bags (recommending lightweight stretch mesh)

Questions & Answers:

  • Q: How do we ensure the pocket doesn’t interfere with the drape?
  • A: Use a lightweight stretch fabric like mesh for the pocket bags, and attach them securely at the waist and front edge to maintain the drape’s flow.

  • Q: Where should the pleats be directed?
  • A: The pleats should either flow straight down to the hem or angle slightly toward the side seam, but not toward the inner leg.

  • Q: What’s the best way to finish the waistband?
  • A: I recommend a thin 2cm waistband cut on bias if using non-stretch fabric, or cut regularly for stretch fabrics. This provides flexibility while maintaining a clean finish that complements the draped design.
