In this week’s session, I explored transforming simple cylindrical shapes into dramatic, sculptural garments, drawing inspiration from current couture shows and vintage Balenciaga designs.

I demonstrated how a single geometric shape with minimal seams can create bold, architectural silhouettes that are very on-trend with current haute couture directions.

The session blended design theory with hands-on draping experimentation as we developed a dramatic sleeve silhouette.

Demonstration Steps:

  • Started with a rectangular fabric piece (143cm x 200cm), folding it to create a base for the garment
  • Created a T-shaped opening approximately 29cm (11 inches) from the top fold
  • Positioned the T-shape with the back slightly longer than the front to create an architectural drape
  • Added gathering at the sleeves to create dramatic volume
  • Experimented with a thin waistband insertion through small openings to create shape definition
  • Explored different neckline possibilities while maintaining the sculptural sleeve silhouette

Questions & Answers:

  • Q: What fabric would work best for this design?
  • A: Fabrics with good drape like crepe, lightweight wovens, or interlock jersey. For more structure, consider organza, taffeta, or poplin shirting.

  • Q: How can I adapt this for a formal event?
  • A: Consider making it in double silk or thick satin as an elegant coat over evening wear. The dramatic silhouette works beautifully for special occasions.

Next week, I’ll continue developing this design, cutting into our draped piece to explore new variations and potentially create a pattern block we can use as a base for future designs.
