In this week’s session, I demonstrated how to develop a symmetrical dress with an elegant A-line silhouette and flared sleeve using a new draping technique.
I showed how a single geometric shape can be manipulated to create multiple design variations, focusing on creating a clean, chic silhouette that’s flattering on different body types.
Demonstration Steps:
- Used a rectangular fabric piece (127cm x 75cm) with specific measurements for different sections
- Positioned fabric on dress form with longer side at center front, pinning at neck/shoulders
- Shaped neckline and adjusted for proper fit at waist/hip
- Created French darts for better waist definition while maintaining relaxed fit
- Shaped sleeve armhole and created flared sleeve effect from the same fabric piece
- Added a deep V-neckline to enhance the silhouette
- Marked all pattern points and transferred lines to create a reusable pattern
Questions & Answers:
- Q: Is 8 centimeters added to the 44 centimeters for the sleeve?
- A: Yes, the 8cm is added to dimension D (center front torso) to allow proper drape for the flared sleeve.
- Q: Would a linen blend work for this dress?
- A: Yes, but if it doesn’t have stretch, don’t make it overly tight and add a zipper at the back for closure.
Next week, I’ll develop the back pattern and complete this project before moving on to more complex asymmetrical designs from the same technique.
