This week, we dove right back into our exciting new series on draping with triangles, and the creative energy was definitely flowing!
I wanted to continue exploring the incredible versatility of this shape, showing how just a few simple pieces of fabric can be transformed into sophisticated and modern garments.
We played with a couple of different ideas, creating an asymmetrical top and then evolving that concept into a fun, edgy, and very wearable dress that I think you’re all going to love.
Demonstration Steps:
- Started with two identical, non-symmetrical triangles cut from a Ponte Roma knit. I showed how these could be draped into a simple, elegant asymmetrical skirt by pinning them at the waist.
- Next, I demonstrated a more complex and interesting draping technique for a top. I took the two triangles and sewed them together at the top points and partially down the sides, leaving openings for the head and arms.
- I played with the placement on the form, stitching the pieces together in an unconventional way to create an interesting, asymmetrical top with a unique sleeve and a softly draped cowl neckline.
- Building on this idea, I brought in two new, larger triangular pieces to create a full dress. The top of the dress used the exact same draping concept as the top we had just created.
- For the skirt, I took a single, large triangle and draped it onto the lower half of the mannequin, creating a sharp, asymmetrical, Victoria Beckham-style hemline.
- We then decided the dress needed a back. I took another large triangle, draped it on the back to mirror the front, and then sewed the front and back pieces together at the side seams.
- We refined the design live, deciding we liked the shorter skirt for a younger, more modern feel. I also showed how you could mimic the gathered detail from the top onto the side of the skirt for a more cohesive look.
This session was a perfect example of how playful and intuitive draping with triangles can be.
We started with a simple idea and, through experimentation, ended up with a complete, sellable, and super chic dress design.
It’s amazing to see how such a basic geometric shape can lead to such dynamic and stylish results.
I’m already looking forward to exploring more possibilities with triangles next week!
