In this lesson, I taught how to draft the sleeve for a classic shirt using a sleeve block that matches the dress form. I demonstrated the process of relaxing the fitted sleeve to create a more relaxed sleeve suitable for a shirt.

Lesson Steps:

  • Place the sleeve block and trace it using dashed lines for easier modification.
  • Draw a straight line across the cap and add a line half an inch above the underarm line.
  • Pivot the sleeve block to meet the new underarm line, blending the cap curve.
  • Drop the shoulder point by half an inch and blend the cap curve to the new shoulder point.
  • Measure and mark the desired front and back armhole lengths from the new shoulder point.
  • Blend the cap curve to meet the marked armhole lengths.
  • Extend the sleeve length at the hem to allow for gathering or pleats, as desired for the shirt sleeve fullness.
