In this lesson, I taught how to drape the back piece of a shirt, including options for a fitted back or adding a box pleat for more room. I demonstrated pinning the muslin fabric and marking key lines.

I started by pinning the straight, fitted back without gathers. Then I showed how to create a box pleat by pinning excess fabric at the center back for more room.

Lesson Steps:

  • Pin the muslin at center back, aligning with crossgrain at waist
  • Smooth fabric upwards, pinning at side seams and armholes for fitted back
  • Mark yoke line, side seams, bust level, armholes, hip line with pencil
  • For box pleat, pin excess fabric at center back
  • Smooth sides, aligning crossgrain at hips
  • Mark new side seams, bust, hip with a different color pencil
  • Remove muslin to transfer markings to pattern pieces
