In this session, I taught how to drape the front of a classic shirt with gathering at the front yoke. I demonstrated the steps on a muslin fabric pinned to a dress form.

I started by leveling the muslin at the waistline and pinning the center front. I then raised the side seam to be parallel to the hip line and pinned it temporarily. After marking reference lines, I smoothed the fabric around the armhole and pushed the excess towards the shoulder/yoke area, creating a pleat.

Lesson Steps:

  • Level the muslin at the waistline and pin the center front
  • Raise the side seam parallel to the hip line and pin temporarily
  • Mark reference lines (underarm, bust, waist, hip)
  • Smooth fabric around armhole, pushing excess towards shoulder/yoke
  • Create a pleat at the yoke area with the excess fabric
  • Mark neckline, yoke lines, and armhole lines with a quarter-inch seam allowance
  • Mark bust points and apex
  • Mark 1 inch extensions at each end of the yoke line
  • Do not cut or open anything yet, transfer muslin to table for further adjustments
