In this session, I taught how to prepare the muslin fabric for draping a basic skirt. We determined the appropriate length and width measurements needed for the front and back skirt pieces based on the dress form’s size.

I demonstrated the process of cutting out the muslin fabric pieces required for draping a basic skirt. This involved measuring the desired length, marking the center front and back, and calculating the width at the hip line while allowing enough ease for movement.

Lesson Steps:

  • Determine the desired skirt length (e.g., 20 inches plus 2-3 inches ease)
  • Mark the center front and back by pressing folds on the selvage
  • Measure from waist to hip line and add ease to find hip line placement
  • At hip line, measure center front to side seam and add several inches ease
  • Cut out front skirt piece using marked measurements
  • For back, measure hip line to center back and add 1-2 inches more ease
  • Cut out back skirt piece, maintaining straight grain line
  • Save fabric scraps for future use
