In this session, I taught how to transfer the draped skirt muslin onto a dotted pattern paper to create a basic skirt pattern. I emphasized the importance of being mindful about paper usage and explored using recycled paper for a more sustainable approach.

I demonstrated tracing the front skirt panel from the muslin drape onto the dotted paper, including marking darts, adding seam allowances, and adjusting the hemline length. I explained my preference for two darts over one for a more fitted look on a basic skirt.

Lesson Steps:

  • Straighten the center front line on the muslin drape
  • Mark the hip line, side seam, and add 1/2″ seam allowance
  • Mark the waistline and dart placements
  • Trace the overall skirt outline, including darts
  • Close the dart intake and redraw the waistline curve
  • Determine the desired skirt length and mark the hemline
  • Add 1″ – 1.5″ seam allowance to the hemline
  • Mark seam allowances (1/2″) on side seams
  • Use an X/O notation system to identify each dart
