In this session, I taught how to draft the basic kimono bodice pattern as the foundation for the Debbie dress project. I demonstrated tracing the back and front bodice blocks, making adjustments for the kimono sleeve, and blending the patterns together.
I showed the steps to draft a basic kimono bodice pattern by tracing the back and front bodice blocks, transferring darts, and creating the kimono sleeve shape. This forms the foundation to be tested and refined further for the Debbie dress design.
Lesson Steps:
- Trace the back bodice block on paper, transferring shoulder dart to armhole
- Open the bust and waist darts slightly on the front bodice
- On the back, mark 1/4″ above shoulder point for sleeve length
- Draw a cross line at desired sleeve length (e.g. 20″)
- Mark the sleeve opening width (e.g. 16″ or 40cm)
- Place front bodice on back, matching shoulders and blending side seams
- On front, mark 1/4″ below shoulder point and blend to sleeve opening
- Draw a diagonal line from bust point to create sleeve shape
- Blend front and back shoulder/armhole lines together
- Trace final back and front bodice with kimono sleeve onto new paper
- Transfer dart markings and add seam allowances
- Cut muslin to test fit the drafted kimono bodice foundation
