In this lesson, I taught how to prepare the skirt pieces for attaching pockets and the zipper. I leveled the hem, bias bound the side seams and center back, marked pocket and zipper placements, and sewed the side seams together.

I demonstrated leveling the skirt hem, bias binding the seams, marking pocket and zipper placements, sewing the side seams, and preparing to hem the skirt using a refined technique suitable for the expensive silk fabric.

Lesson Steps:

  • Level the skirt hem by trimming any excess from stretching
  • Bias bind the side seams and center back seams
  • Mark pocket openings on side seams with pins
  • Mark zipper placement at center back with pins
  • Sew the front and back skirt pieces together at the side seams
  • Trim any unevenness along the sewn side seams
  • Sew the center back seam, leaving an opening for the zipper
  • Secure the waist edge with a line of stitching to prevent fraying
  • Prepare to hem by folding under 1/2 inch, stitching, trimming close to stitching
  • Press, then fold under again close to the stitching line to create a narrow hem
  • Stitch the final narrow hem by hand for a refined finish
