In this lesson, I demonstrated how to properly measure the body and mark important reference points for dressmaking.

I used a real-life model to illustrate the process.

I emphasized the importance of wearing well-fitted shapewear and standing in a natural, relaxed posture during the measuring process. I also recommended taking photos from the correct distance and angle to accurately capture the body’s shape.

Lesson Steps:

  • Find and mark the center front line from the neck to the hip line, passing through the bust apex
  • Locate and mark the bust line, waist line, high hip line, and hip line
  • Identify the shoulder points and mark the shoulder line
  • Mark the armhole line, ensuring it’s straight from the front view
  • Mark the chest line, running from the mid-armhole to the center front
  • Mark the side seam line, dividing the body in half from underarm to shoulder point
  • Mark the center back line from the nape to the hip line
  • Measure all marked lines, taking circumference measurements and vertical/horizontal measurements as needed
  • Note any specific body characteristics, such as a longer torso or sloped shoulders, to adjust the dress form accordingly
  • Measure the distance between bust apexes, apex to waist, and other diagonal measurements as required

I emphasized the importance of accurately marking and measuring these reference points to ensure proper fit when creating garments or adjusting a dress form to match an individual’s body shape.
