In this lesson, I taught how to draft a basic waistband for a skirt without any overlap or underlap. The key points were:

  • Measure the waist circumference of the skirt and divide it into front and back measurements.
  • Cut a rectangular piece for the waistband using these measurements, allowing for seam allowances.
  • The waistband should be cut on the cross-grain of the fabric for a bit of flexibility.

Lesson Steps:

  • Calculate the total waist measurement and divide it into front and back lengths.
  • Draw a rectangle with the front and back lengths as the width, and the desired waistband height plus seam allowances as the length.
  • Mark the center front, center back, and side seam notches.
  • Cut the waistband piece from the fabric’s cross-grain.
  • Cut an interfacing piece for the back if needed, depending on the fabric type.
  • This drafts a simple waistband without any overlap that attaches directly to the skirt.
