In this lesson, I taught how to finish the seams of the Elena skirt using bias binding for a high-end look. I used silk habotai bias strips to cover and enclose the raw edges, creating a Hong Kong seam finish.

Since I’m using an expensive fabric, I want high-end finishings without overlocking. I’ll cover all seams with bias strips, turning them into Hong Kong seams. This encloses the raw edges neatly while allowing the seams to open flat. I’ll start by binding the side, front, and back seams before joining the skirt pieces.

Lesson Steps:

  • Measure and cut bias strips from silk habotai fabric, 1.25 inches wide
  • Attach the bias strips to the raw edges of seams, enclosing them fully
  • Work on the side seams, front seam, and back seam, leaving the waist and hem edges
  • Sew the bias strips to each seam allowance, folding and enclosing the raw edge
  • Press the finished Hong Kong seams flat, with the bias strip covering the raw edges
