In this session, I explained the essential tools needed for draping and patternmaking. I covered everything from sewing machines and dress forms to various marking tools like pencils, tracing wheels, and tapes.
Lesson Steps:
- Gather a sewing machine (home or industrial straight stitch)
- Have a dress form in your desired size (I used size 6)
- Prepare muslin or lightweight non-stretch cotton fabric
- Obtain pattern making dotted paper for transferring draped pieces
- Collect steel pins or dressmaking pins (round back colored pins recommended)
- Have a tape measure in centimeters and inches
- Equip fabric scissors and thread clippers
- Obtain a clear, flexible ruler with metric and inch markings
- Have scotch tape on hand
- Use a needle point tracing wheel for transferring draped pieces
- Gather pencils (H, HB, 2B, 3B) and colored pencils (red, green, blue)
- Prepare twill tapes or draping tapes (or use graphic tapes)
- Have a curve ruler for patternmaking
- Obtain a pattern notcher for punching notches and markers
