In this session, I explained the essential tools needed for draping and patternmaking. I covered everything from sewing machines and dress forms to various marking tools like pencils, tracing wheels, and tapes.

Lesson Steps:

  • Gather a sewing machine (home or industrial straight stitch)
  • Have a dress form in your desired size (I used size 6)
  • Prepare muslin or lightweight non-stretch cotton fabric
  • Obtain pattern making dotted paper for transferring draped pieces
  • Collect steel pins or dressmaking pins (round back colored pins recommended)
  • Have a tape measure in centimeters and inches
  • Equip fabric scissors and thread clippers
  • Obtain a clear, flexible ruler with metric and inch markings
  • Have scotch tape on hand
  • Use a needle point tracing wheel for transferring draped pieces
  • Gather pencils (H, HB, 2B, 3B) and colored pencils (red, green, blue)
  • Prepare twill tapes or draping tapes (or use graphic tapes)
  • Have a curve ruler for patternmaking
  • Obtain a pattern notcher for punching notches and markers
