Transferring Pattern to Dot Paper

In this lesson, I taught how to transfer a skirt pattern onto dot paper for pattern making. I demonstrated aligning the pattern pieces, tracing the outlines using a needle point tracer, and then drawing the lines neatly with a marker.

Lesson Steps:

  • Align the pattern pieces on the dot paper grid
  • Use a needle point tracer to transfer the pattern outline
  • Trace over the transferred lines neatly with a marker
  • Separate the front and back pattern pieces

Preparing the Muslin Toile

I explained the process of cutting a muslin (test fabric) toile from the transferred pattern pieces. I highlighted marking important points like darts, adding seam allowances strategically, and cutting the fabric pieces accurately.

Lesson Steps:

  • Cut the front pattern piece on the fabric fold
  • Add seam allowances on side seams (front and back)
  • Add seam allowance on center back seam
  • Mark darts, center front/back, and other notches
  • Cut the muslin pieces carefully

Assembling the Muslin Toile

I recommended sewing a zipper into the muslin toile for accurate fitting. I advised marking important lines like the waistline, darts, and center front/back to aid in fitting adjustments later.

Lesson Steps:

  • Sew the darts on the front and back pieces
  • Stitch the side seams, leaving an opening for the zipper
  • Insert a zipper in the center back opening
  • Mark the waistline, darts, and other key points
