In this session, I taught how to drape a Peter Pan collar.

While draping collars may seem simple, there are specific techniques involved to achieve the desired shape and fit around the neckline.

I demonstrated the step-by-step process of draping a rounded Peter Pan collar, explaining how to mark, cut, and shape the muslin fabric to create the collar pattern. I also showed how to adjust the pattern for a tighter or looser fit around the neck.

Lesson Steps:

  • Prepare a 13×13 inch muslin square with one edge folded (center back)
  • Mark 3 inches from the folded edge on both sides and draw a line 2 inches up
  • Round the corners slightly and trim the excess
  • Place the center back on the dress form, slightly raised
  • Pin at the center back and flatten the sides towards the front
  • Mark the shoulder points and snip the neckline area for a comfortable fit
  • Pivot the muslin at the shoulder point, bringing it down 2-3 inches
  • Open up the neckline area slightly for a flat lay
  • Draw the desired collar shape around the neckline
  • Transfer the pattern onto paper, correcting any curves as needed
  • Adjust the pattern for a tighter or looser fit by opening up the curved areas
  • Cut the final pattern pieces: top fabric (1cm seam allowance), lining (1/4 inch seam allowance), and interfacing (1/4 inch seam allowance)
  • Sew the pieces together, allowing the lining and interfacing to roll inwards slightly
