In this session, I demonstrate proper techniques for working with luxury silk fabrics when cutting out pattern pieces.

I explain how to handle delicate silks, work with selvages, and address common challenges like fabric width variations.

I share professional tips for maintaining grain alignment and careful pattern placement.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Evaluate fabric width and selvages in relation to pattern pieces
  2. Pin selvages together to prevent slipping
  3. Check grain alignment when laying out pattern
  4. Position pattern pieces with consideration for fabric width limitations
  5. Use silk pins specifically for delicate fabrics
  6. Pin within seam allowances to avoid marking fabric
  7. Mark notches and reference points carefully
  8. Cut pattern pieces while maintaining fabric stability
  9. Create small snips for notch markings
  10. Handle cut pieces carefully to maintain shape
  11. Evaluate remaining fabric for bodice and lining pieces
  12. Consider fabric alternatives for lining if needed

Working with silk requires extra care and attention. I emphasize using proper tools and techniques to avoid damaging the fabric while achieving professional results. Remember that silk’s natural properties may require slight adjustments to your typical cutting process.
