I demonstrate how to transfer a fitted skirt pattern onto manila cardboard to create a block.

I explain the process of tracing the final lines without seam allowance, cutting out the block, and adding notches for important reference points.

I also show how to create versions both with and without seam allowances, which will be used as the basis for future pattern designs.

Lesson Steps:

  1. Secure the fitted skirt pattern to manila cardboard using tape or pins.
  2. Trace the final lines without seam allowance using a needlepoint tracing wheel.
  3. Draw over the traced dots with a pencil, then finalize with a darker pen.
  4. Cut out the block carefully using an exacto knife.
  5. Use a notcher to mark important points like the hip line and waist dart.
  6. Create a version with seam allowances by adding them to the waist, side seams, and hem.
  7. Add notches to the version with seam allowances.

I emphasize the importance of accuracy and explain how these blocks will be used to create working patterns for various skirt designs in future lessons.

I also mention that students can choose whether to include seam allowances in their base blocks, though I prefer not to for clarity in future pattern manipulations.
