In this lesson, I taught how to transfer the draped front piece onto paper to create a pattern.
I showed the steps to open up the draped folds, trace the lines, and make adjustments for symmetry on both sides of the pattern. I also demonstrated transferring the back piece, making armhole adjustments, and preparing the pattern for cutting.
Lesson Steps:
- Opened up the draped front fold and traced the neckline, shoulders, armholes, side seams, bust, waist and hip lines onto paper
- Folded the pattern piece to transfer one correct side to the other for symmetry
- Traced the back piece including the dart onto paper
- Adjusted the armhole by dropping it slightly and adding ease at the underarm
- Blended the side seams from underarm to hem
- Prepared to add seam allowances before cutting the final pattern pieces
I also showed how to separate the front pattern piece down the center to allow for using two different fabrics. This creates an interesting design line down the center front.
Lesson Steps:
- Separated the front pattern down the center front line
- Added seam allowances along the new center front edges
- Explained how each front half can now be cut from a different fabric
- Demonstrated the simple technique to get a high-impact design element
